This is the first doctoral degree offered by Nyack College/ATS and the first doctorate offered by an educational institution of The Christian and Missionary Alliance.

In his announcement to the campus community, he said, “Our perseverance, endurance, and persistence finally win. More importantly, God blesses us with a favorable ruling in HIS time! The Board of Regents approved the charter and master plan amendments. This means we have proven to be "institutionally ready" to offer a doctorate and secondly, that the specific D.Min. is approved.”

Walk into any Barnes & Noble or Borders Bookstore and...well, the book neatly line the shelves--all categorized and alphabetized. But imagine the process of getting a bookstore consumer-ready and consumer-friendly. That's the yeoman's task being accomplished by five Nyack students assisting the owners of Old Cancun Christian Bookstore.

As they battle fatigue and a few inconvenient minor injuries, Team Cancun (pictured above) invites you to check out the bookstore's website they set up at http://www.libreriaunidadcristiana.com. Read about their challenges and their triumphs at http://www.nyackinmexico2010.blogspot.com www.nyackinmexico2010.blogspot.com.

Faculty advisor for the group, Prof. James Muckell, will take another team to Mexico in January 2011 to continue the service-learning work that Nyack has established with an orphanage there. He hopes to have a large enough student group to assign a crew to follow up on the tremendous groundwork done by team leader Carolina Simbana with Piero Gorriti, Farrah Michael, Stephanie Azevedo, and Gavin Penny.

Pray for their endurance to continue the painstaking work and for safe travels as the group will head home next week.

When people ask, "What did you do for your summer vacation?" five Nyack College students will answer, "Went to Cancun!" Of course, most of us will immediately think 'fun in the sun.' While there will be opportunities for that, Professor Jim Muckell's business and accounting students--Stephanie Azevedo, Piero Gorriti, Farrah Michael, Gavin Penny, and Carolina Simbana--are on a much weightier mission.

Accompanied by Prof. Muckell earlier this week, the students headed for a dream service-learning project in Mexico, where they are helping to computerize the Old Cancun Christian Bookstore and also developing its website. The Youth With a Mission (YWAM) facility in Cancun will be their home base until the end of the month.

The venture began with the students researching available software packages for Spanish-speaking Christian bookstores as well as for tools to construct a bookstore website. Through the efforts of Dr. Gordon Boronow, a Nyack economics professor, the project was funded by the Titus Foundation. Additional funds were secured when another Nyack accounting student, Carlos Florentin, shared with his father the need for finances.

Check out their blog: http://nyackinmexico2010.blogspot.com, and stay abreast of their progress. Keep Team Cancun in your prayers!

Grateful Grads Celebrate Commencement 2010

Posted by Deborah.Walker

Record attendance marked the celebration of commencement in the auditorium of the Westchester County Center for nearly 600 graduates who completed undergraduate and graduate degree programs. During the ceremony, President’s Hall of Distinction inductees received honorary doctorates: Mr. Michael Ahn, the Doctor of Letters; RNDr. Martin Palouš, the Doctor of Laws; and Mr. Paul Glenn, the Doctor of Laws. Mr. Ahn delivered the Commencement address at Nyack’s 127th graduation.

Musical performances by a School of Music ensemble were conducted by Dr. Sue Talley. Violinist Hongik Kim, Class of 2010, was accompanied by Margrit Zimmerman in another musical selection. Capping the presentation of degrees to the graduates, music professor Dr. Dana Talley led a sonorous rendition of “How Great Thou Art.”

Regrettably absent from the impressive roster of platform guests, was H.E. Mathieu Kérékou, president of Benin (1972-1991; 1996-2006). Scheduled to offer a prayer of blessing over the graduates, President Kérékou had been recently hospitalized and was unable to travel. Still the May 8 commencement had special significance for him: a 2010 magna cum laude Nyack graduate was his daughter, Hondo Sephora Claire Kérékou.

	Excerpts from platform speakers:

DR. MICHAEL AHN, Commencement speaker and Honorary Doctor of Letters recipient

"Every one of us was born with a specific aim and calling from God to be respected regardless of race, gender, age, or title. Look at the wildflowers on the hill. Their shapes are different. Their colors are different. And their blooming time is different. However, they live together peacefully and harmoniously. That is like our diverse and wonderful student body here."

"Being professional and creative is important. However, that is not enough for success. Human relationships are also very important as we work and live together. We need cooperation, coordination, and support from others for success. Networking is a key word for success in this era because one person or one organization has limited capabilities."

"Whenever I have faced challenges, I have considered them as opportunities to make me stronger and tried hard to overcome them with the help of mentors, families, and friends. I believe God has always been with me. God has always made me stronger through the challenges I have encountered. Whenever you face challenges, have faith that you can overcome those challenges!"

DR. MARTIN PALOUS, Honorary Doctor of Laws recipient

"Receiving the Honorary Doctor of Laws at Nyack College – today, one of the largest institutions of Christian Higher Education in the United States, which, as it is stated in its basic documents and information materials, “seeks to…fulfill its mission by being (1) socially relevant; (2) academically excellent; (3) globally engaged; (4) intentionally diverse; and (5) personally transforming,” is indeed a great and, I have to admit, quite unexpected honor for me. I would like to assure you that I am receiving this distinction not only as a recognition of my past modest contributions to the implementation of the above mentioned five core values written into the foundation of this school, but also as a personal challenge for the future and a great responsibility.”

“…as the linguistic meaning indicates, commencement rather points to the opposite direction. It does not denote “end,” but on the contrary denotes“beginning,” “start,” ”opening,” “initiation”. It designates a forward-oriented transition point in your lives, a bridge between your past and your future. It evokes not only memories, good or bad, but first of all new opportunities, choices you will be making after this graduation.

“…let the Almighty God give you this Solomonic wisdom, and let His Blessing and Grace be with always you wherever you are going to go and whatever you are going to do. Because what else than mutual understanding and relationships of love and friendship do we all need if we want to “live well” in the postmodern world today, to preserve in it our basic values, our personal integrity, our political freedom, our fragile, but always with the divine gift of action endowed, humanity.”

Dr. Michael G. Scales, Nyack College/ATS president has the unique ability to recognize and celebrate the gifting in people. After more than three decades in higher education, his legacy is already established in the trail of mentees that stretches across our nation. Just as he has impacted the hundreds of young men and women who treasure his mentorship, Mike Scales is also quick to esteem the many seasoned leaders that God has placed in his path. So it is no surprise that he would establish a way to honor the people he refers to as the “heroes” in his life.

Dr. Scales unveiled Nyack’s new President’s Hall of Distinction on Commencement Day at a brunch held at the Tarrytown House Estates for family and friends of the honorees along with the members of the campus community. The recipients of this honor embody Nyack’s core values of being—academically excellent, globally engaged, intentionally diverse, personally transforming, and socially relevant. Three individuals were installed. They are pictured above (left to right), RNDr. Martin Palouš, United Nations Ambassador to the Czech Republic; Mr. Michael Ahn, retired president and CEO of LG Electronics North America; Dr. Scales; and Nyack/ATS Trustee Paul Glenn.

Participants were primarily from organizations in the Washington, DC area, though some traveled from as far away as New York.

The May 8 workshop facilitator was Nancy Chan (pictured at left), an economics and policy analyst at the Stanford Research Institute and a former analyst at the Urban Institute.

A graduate of the Master of Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University, where she concentrated in public management and non-profit studies, Ms. Chan also holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She became involved with non-profits when she helped Little Lights Urban Ministries launch their after-school tutoring program for inner city children in Southeast DC.

Dean Johnson shared about the overwhelmingly positive feedback from workshop attendees. "They expressed a deep sense of satisfaction at the increased sense of competency after learning how to translate their compelling grass roots success stories into language that can attract funders to their cause."

This workshop and previous ones sponsored by the DC campus demonstrate Nyack's commitment to community development and relationship-building with government and social agencies in the metropolitan DC area.

Rev. Rosilio Roman III, a 1995 alumnus of Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, has been appointed to the post of assistant vice president for Multicultural Ministries and Church Multiplication by The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA).

Considered a historic move for the Alliance, vice president for Church ministries, Rev. John Soper commented recently on Roman's selection. "As our congregations are becoming more culturally diverse, so must our national leadership." Rev. Soper, a member of the Nyack/ATS Board of Trustees shared, "Ethnic people currently represent about one-third of the population of the United States, and that same percentage is held within the upper leadership of Church Ministries."

Rev. Roman has served for more than 25 years at the C&MA's National Office in Colorado Springs. His ministry career began as a chaplain candidate in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. From 1987 to 1995, he was senior pastor of The Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Manati-Pueblo in Manati, Puerto Rico. He later served as church planting director as well as district superintendent of the Puerto Rico District of the C&MA.

Nearly three months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, an update on Nyack's efforts to raise funds to help survivors of the January 2010 disaster was reported by Dr. Vilma Balmaceda on behalf of the Solidarity Committee.

In a recent email, she shares: "We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the students, faculty, deans, department chairs, and staff members who helped in multiple ways to make the Open Mic and Benefit Concert for Haiti such a great success. The two events combined allowed the student subcommittee to raise a total of $1,129.17."

She continues, "...the Lord has blessed the efforts of our Nyack/ATS community as we have come together to extend a hand to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Our fund currently has a total of $2,919.17 and we are planning to have one more fundraiser before the end of the semester."

Dr. Balmaceda solicits the continued prayers for Haiti from the campus community as well as prayer asking for God's direction for the committee as it makes final decisions about the community development project that will receive the funds raised this semester.

Strength in numbers is evident in the collaboration of the faculty, staff, and students as Nyack demonstrates its core values.

Nyack's recent sponsorship of a benefit gospel concert at Carnegie Hall in partnership with LemonAID FOR HAITI was an enormous success. Despite the adversity of winter weather advisories that week, supporters rallied together on Friday, February 26 and turned ticket sales into food for young earthquake survivors in the already impoverished nation of Haiti.

Co-founder of LEMONAID with her husband, Billy and her three children, Chedera, Christopher and Conner, Paige Strackman sent along a gracious expression of gratitude.

"Thanks to the support of Nyack, LemonAID for HAITI raised enough money from ticket sales and donations to send 30,030 pounds of food to children there. This will feed 400 children rice for 300 meals resulting in rice for 120,000 individual meals. Thi sis utterly remarkable! So we don't create a security risk for the children, we are sending almost 800 pounds of food a week to the feed program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti that is feeding 400 children six days a week. Words fail to adequately express my gratitude to Nyack College. But I know the kids in Haiti receiving the food, thanks to your involvement, are applauding your efforts to help them!"
