Oppose Cuts in New York State Student Aid

By Deborah.Walker - Nyack College is one of more than 100 independent colleges and universities in New York State who are a part of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU). Our own President Michael Scales is a member of CICU’s Board of Trustees.
In light of impending New York State budget cuts, CICU President Abraham Lackman, alerted member campuses about how we can make our voices heard in Albany on the issue of financial aid reductions.

President Lackman sends the following message:

"As you know, New York State faces extremely difficult financial challenges. Funding for college financial aid could be targeted in the weeks and months ahead as our elected representatives figure out how to close a $14 billion hole in the state’s Budget. Just today, the Governor announced $5.2 billion in possible budget cuts as a first step.

In advance of Governor Paterson’s Executive Budget — which is expected on December 16 — I write to ask for ten seconds of your time to help mobilize in support of state student aid programs. More than 300,000 students depend on state financial assistance to meet their college costs. Here is what you can do now:

1. Forward this link to your family and friends: http://capwiz.com/cicu/mlm/signup/
2. Ask them to sign up to receive an e-mail at times when their voice of support will matter most.

In the months ahead, I’ll send updates to let you know when your calls, e-mails and other conversations with policymakers will help to funding for student aid.
Thank you for taking a stand in support of student financial aid. Your positive action will continue to make a difference."

By Deborah.Walker -
Dr. Anita Underwood, appointed dean of the School of Business and Leadership in August 2008, was recently invited to join the steering committee of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Research Center in Adult Learning. The new center, developed to study adult learning, is a joint venture the CCCU shares with host institution, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) in Marion, IN.

For a two-year term, Dr. Underwood will be a part of a 10-15 member steering committee that convenes biannually in conjunction with an annual conference on adult education. Responsibilities of the committee include soliciting research proposals from CCCU member institutions as well as establishing and prioritizing a research agenda and assessment tools for the research. Committee members will also identify and recommend research fellows, who will reflect the denominational makeup of the CCCU and represent a wide spectrum of academic disciplines.

Dr. Underwood’s nomination was reviewed and accepted by the CCCU and university leaders. She was notified of her selection by Dr. Cynthia Tweedell, Executive Director, CCCU Center for Research in Adult Learning.

The Nyack College community proudly congratulates Dr. Underwood for another outstanding accomplishment.

A New Day Dawns... Nyack's President Michael G. Scales on Election 2008

By Deborah.Walker -

President Michael G. Scales issued the following statement about our nation's presidential election.

Tuesday, November 4, 2008, was truly a momentous occasion.
In one sense, it was the culmination of a long, hard-fought political campaign. Every four years we go through this. We, the American people, select the most powerful leader of this most powerful nation on earth. With so much at stake, it is no wonder that the contest is hard fought. This year was no different in the intensity of the contest. This year will once again exhibit our greatness because there will be a peaceful transition of power.
Yet we all know this year’s election is different. Both contestants are honorable men. One is a former POW who invested his life in the service of his country. The other is the first African American on the top of the ticket. Indeed, he is the first minority to receive his party’s nomination.
At the culmination, each contestant spoke to his supporters. Anyone with a semblance of an open mind could see and hear that both of these men personify the character and greatness of America. Both men called for unity.
One exhibited great leadership by stating that he alone takes full responsibility for his loss—no finger pointing. Further, he pledged full support for the winner of the contest. And he asked all Americans to do the same.
The winner of the contest spoke to the hopes and dreams of people all around the world. I am just old enough to vaguely and sadly remember a segregated south. It is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring to now see an African American elected as our 44th president. Further, President-elect Obama implied, “I can do it and you can too!” Yes, we can…make a better world. His words and his life give people hope even “to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world.”

Therefore in another sense, Election Day 2008 was both the culmination of a centuries-old struggle and the dawning of a new day for America and the world. The creative spirit is alive and well in America. We are continuously re-inventing ourselves. We can be the “city set on a hill.”
With this contest over, I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address. He quoted scripture by saying, “…so still it must be said, "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."
A new contest begins. Our role, as followers of Jesus, is to pray and to support our government officials—the ones who lead today and the ones of the new administration to come.
Please pray for President-elect Barack Obama, his administration, and may God bless America.

Remembering Ernie Armoogam (1971-2008)

The Nyack community was saddened today by the news that Alton “Ernie” Armoogam passed away. A 1997 Nyack College alumnus and former employee, Ernie courageously dealt with health issues in recent years.

Of his passing, Dr. Michael Scales said, “He was one of my heroes.” Loved as well by students and colleagues, he served in Student Development as Director of Student Programs and was a Satellite Housing Residence Director. He was also Nyack's Head Coach for Women's Softball Coach.
While working at Mont Lawn Camp in Bushkill, PA, he spoke highly of Nyack students who worked there as summer counselors. Armoogam commented on how the students reflected Nyack’s five core values and “exceeded the expectations” as they “bonded together and with other people demonstrating what they received at school.”
The Nyack College community will celebrate Ernie's life on the Rockland County campus. Sunday, October 19 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. , a viewing will be held in Pardington Hall. The Homegoing Celebration will also be held in Pardington Hall on Monday, October 20 at noon, followed by the interment.
Cards may be mailed to his mother, Mrs. Iris Febus, 2609 Briggs Avenue, Bronx, New York 10468.

By Deborah.Walker - Nyack’s own Dr. Michael G. Scales has been selected as the new chair of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Commission for Advancing Intercultural Competencies.

Founded in 1976, the CCCU is an association of 185 faith-based campuses in 24 countries. The Commission was developed by the CCCU Board of Directors to develop biblically-based initiatives to help faculty, administrators, and students deepen their understanding of the principle of "loving your neighbor."

Topics explored by the Commission on behalf of colleges and universities around the globe include race, gender, and ethnicity; the plight of the disenfranchised; and world religions.

The Robert and Susan Andringa Award for Advancing Racial Harmony is an example of public recognition that the Commission awards to member campuses. Nyack College was the recipient of the Racial Harmony Award in February 2001.

On Dr. Scales’s appointment, Dr. Mimi Barnard, CCCU Vice President for Professional Development & Research says, "The selection of Dr. Scales as chair was a natural choice for the Commission in light of Nyack's heritage and commitment to addressing these issues. We are excited about the future!"

Congratulations, Mr. President!

Passing the Baton at AGSC

By Deborah.Walker -

Dr. Craig Ellison, Nyack's Distinguished Professor of Urban Studies and Counseling, the first professor to receive this recognition, was honored at Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS) Rockland recently. Faculty, staff, and students gathered for a high-spirited celebration of his service to the Alliance Graduate School of Counseling and to ATS.

Highly respected in his field, letters from two longtime associates, renowned Christian counselor and author, Gary Collins and Dr. James Dobson, founder/chairman of Focus on the Family, were read. Other tributes were compiled in an album. ATS Alumni Association President Donna Baptiste made a presentation on behalf of graduates. For the special occasion, an AGSC faculty and staff choir performed, "God Will Make a Way." The flock of students who surrounded Dr. Ellison with well-wishes (and their cameras for a bit of memorabilia) spoke volumes of their love for the AGSC Director.

From his side of the lectern, Dr. Ellison shared the following sentiments:

More than 240 students have graduated from the Alliance Graduate School of Counseling (AGSC) in the past nine years. On our New York City and Rockland campuses, 243 students have enrolled for the fall 2008 semester.

God has brought us through many Red Sea experiences--repeatedly confirming that this is HIS program. Because of His faithfulness, we can celebrate the launch of AGSC's second New York State approved program in Marriage and Family Therapy being offered this fall.

AGSC has become known as a program with 1. rapid and steady growth, 2. a solid spiritual foundation, 3. diversity, 4. a wonderful sense of community, 5. high caliber students and 6.

academic excellence competitive with similar programs throughout the United States.

Last year, two AGSC graduates passed the national comprehensive counseling exam in the 95th percentile. God has blessed us with outstanding full-time and part-time faculty. Our students have dared to trust Him with their future. They have demonstrated that they are motivated by ministry rather than money.

Saturday, September 6 was a celebration of the way the Lord has led in all of our lives. He has brought us together and guided faculty, staff, and students alike. As we continue to listen to the voice of God, He will continue to lead us with His faithfulness.

Add to your knowledge, vision. Vision puts fire in your soul and perseverance in your portfolio. Where there is no vision, the people perish. Where there is vision, people see God at work. Vision comes from walking closely with God--the ultimate therapist! May we be filled and unified in the vision God has given to us at AGSC.

God will make a way when there is no other way!
submitted by Dr. Craig Ellison

What's New at Nyack?

By Deborah.Walker -
Dr. David F. Turk, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Nyack College, recently announced corporate restructuring, which will be in place as the 2008-2009 academic year commences on September 2.

In 2003, Nyack College adopted the university model, establishing several schools and divisions. The fall 2008 changes will strengthen the more than 50 cutting edge undergraduate and graduate degree programs currently offered or being developed. The campus structure includes Alliance Theological Seminary, The College of Bible and Christian Ministry (formerly the Division of Bible and Christian Ministry), The College of Arts & Sciences (formerly the Division of Liberal Arts and Sciences), The School of Business and Leadership (a merger of the former School of Business with the School of Adult and Distance Education), The School of Education, The School of Music, The School of Nursing, and The School of Human Services (formerly the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences).
A new masters program in Marriage and Family Therapy, directed by Dr. Andrew Mercurio, will launch in September. Program development is in progress for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, led by Dr. Theresa Wood and Dr. Inseon Hwang. The Doctor of Ministry, which has received candidacy status for accreditation by the New York State Education Department, is also being developed. The D.Min. program is the first of three doctoral programs Nyack plans to offer to achieve university status.
New deans have also been appointed. Dr. Ronald Walborn is dean of Alliance Theological Seminary and The College of Bible and Christian Ministry. Dr. Anita Underwood is dean of The School of Business and Leadership, a merging of the schools of Business and Adult and Distance Education. Mr. Mark Meehan is now dean of Community Life and Learning, with oversight of three separate academic units: the Division of Library Services, the Division of Student Development, and the Division of Student Success. Dr. Gwen Parker-Ames is the new associate dean of the Division of Student Success

With approximately 300 full-time employees, 71% of the teaching faculty have terminal degrees, which will jump to 76% in the 2009-2010 academic year. A recent survey of faculty and staff, conducted by Mr. Scott Reitz, new director of Global Service Learning, revealed that these employees have lived in nearly 20 countries for purposes other than vacation. International work they have engaged in includes community development, English education, government, humanitarian relief, military, organizational administration, business, and church planting. Germany, Kenya, Ireland, Tanzania, Scotland, Italy, Sweden, South Korea, Iceland, Ecuador, China, Japan, and India are some of the countries where faculty have lived. Respondents to the survey have visited 118 countries and are fluent in 13 languages and conversational in 20.

The expertise of an extraordinary team of men and women--both faculty and staff--led by a group of veteran administrators establishes the foundation for Nyack--college, seminary, and graduate schools--to fulfill its pledge to be academically excellent, globally engaged, intentionally diverse, personally transforming, and socially relevant.

July 1 event gathered Rockland County business community

Nyack College was the host sponsor for the Rockland Business Association (RBA) “Business After Hours” event held in Shuman Hall last week. RBA, a non-profit organization headquartered in Pearl River, currently has more than 1,000 members who are from the various towns in the Hudson Valley and New Jersey.
The monthly gathering provides the business community the perfect networking platform, where information gathering and sharing takes place in a casual setting with intentional relationship-building in mind.
Executive Director of Community Relations, Earl Miller, is excited about Nyack’s involvement with RBA. “The July 1st event provided the opportunity for attendees to network with other business people as well as, in many instances, to be introduced to Nyack College as a member of the County’s business community,” says Miller. He continued, “When casually polled, about 90% of those present were first time visitors to the Rockland campus.” RBA has already requested a return visit to Shuman Hall next year.
