Lady Warriors conclude season with Lady Rams
Women's Softball
4/25/09- The Nyack College Softball team wrapped up the 2009 season with the Lady Rams from Philadelphia University Saturday afternoon at Lady Warrior Field. Nyack dropped the doubleheader 0-3, 0-9, as the Lady Rams move on to the CACC Softball Tournament. Pitchers Sarah Bolles (Jr., Wallingford, CT) in the 1st game, and Lauren Merkley (Sr., Kinnelon, NJ) in the 2nd game, suffered the losses for Nyack. Unfortunately, they recieved little offensive support as the Lady Warriors could manage only two hits, one in each game, for the day. Nyack said goodbye to both Merkley and shotstop Mel Susen (Sr., Haledon, NJ), two top players, but the only senior starters that the Lady Warriors are losing.
With this year of transition with a new Head Coach, Joe Rodriguez, completed, the Lady Warriors look forward to next season with a more experienced roster and new hope.
Lady Warriors stumble in twinbill with Lady Wildcats

4/18/09- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University swept a pair of games from the visiting Lady Warriors of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field in Wilmington, DE. Wilmington won the first game by a score of 5-0, and completed the sweep with a 1-0 blanking in the nightcap. Wilmington got things started in the opener in the bottom of the first inning, as junior Lindsay Watson led off with a triple. She later scored on a bases-loaded walk by classmate Heather Bush. The Lady Wildcats added two more in the second, as sophomore Amanda Cordrey laced a two-out double that plated senior Lindsay Frye and Watson. Watson kept things going in the fourth, as she blasted a solo home run to give the hosts a 4-0 lead. Wilmington tacked one more in the fifth, on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Kristin Tomlinson. Junior Katie Turner (6-9) earned the win, as she gave up just two hits on struck out eight in the complete game victory. Lauren Merkley (Sr., Kinnelon, NJ) suffered the loss for Nyack, as she gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in six innings of work. The Lady Wildcats were led by Watson, who finished 3-for-4 with two run scored and a RBI. Cordrey was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while freshman Amanda Crockett had a double for the ‘Cats. Nyack’s Lauren Campbell (Jr., Katy, TX) had both hits for the Lady Warriors. Game two saw both team struggle offensively, but Wilmington finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Amanda Cordrey singled to lead off the inning as was lifted for pinch runner Angelica Appold. Appold was sacrificed over to second by sophomore Nicole Gebhart, and came home on a double from junior Heather Bush. That run would stand and be all the ‘Cats would need, as they held on for the 1-0 victory. Junior hurler Kim Lawrence (6-8) tossed a gem, as she gave up just one hit and struck out a season-high 14 batters. The hit, by Christina Braziel (So., Magnolia, TX) did not come until there were two-outs in the seventh inning. Merkley took the loss for Nyack, as she scattered five hits and one run (earned) over six innings.
Lady Warriors unable to cage Lady Cougars

4/16/09- The Nyack College Softball team was on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep this afternoon at home, as the Lady Cougars from Caldwell College defeated the Lady Warriors, 5-0 and 4-1. In game one the Nyack offense was shutout, was held to one hit, a single by shortstop Mel Susen (Sr., Haledon, NJ), and committed four errors that led to three unearned runs. Nyack starting pitcher, Sarah Bolles (Wallingford, CT) suffered the loss. In game two, the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as thirdbaseman Christina Braziel (So., Magnolia, TX) brought home the lone RBI on the day for Nyack with a double. The Lady Warriors had more opportunities to score during the course of the game but were unable to collect a clutch hit. Nyack was led by a 2-for-3 performance from Susen, including a double of her own. Pitcher Lauren Merkley (Sr., Kinnelon, NJ) gave up only 5 hits, but the Nyack defense committed a costly error in the 6th inning which allowed 2 unearned runs to score and gave Caldwell a 2-1 lead; and then the Lady Cougars collected 3 of their 5 hits in the top of the seventh, which helped to plate 2 more runs.
The Lady Warriors hit the diamond next when they travel to Wilmington on Saturday for a CACC doubleheader.
Lady Warriors split with #14 Georgian Court

4/13/09- The Nyack College Softball team split their CACC doubleheader at Georgian Court this afternoon, taking the first game, 5-3 before dropping the second game, 1-7. Georgian Court began the week as the #14 ranked team in NCAA Div. II. Nyack was down, 1-2 in the top of the sixth inning in game one when thirdbaseman Christina Braziel (So., Magnolia, TX) belted a 2-run homerun to give the Lady Warriors a 3-2 lead. Georgian Court tied the score in their bottom half of the inning, but Nyack put together a 2-run rally in the top of the seventh and pitcher Sarah Bolles (Jr., Wallingford, CT) put down Georgian Court in order in the bottom of the seventh to give her the complete game win. Nyack was led by a 3-for-4 performance from shortstop Mel Susen (Sr., Haledon, NJ).
In game two Nyack held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the 5th, but Georgian Court erupted for 6 runs in the inning and kept the Lady Warriors from scoring any further to gain a split on the day. Nyack was crippled by a costly error with 2 outs in the 5th that opened the door to 6 unearned runs against Lady Warrior pitcher Lauren Merkley (Sr., Kinnelon, NJ); Nyack also managed only 2 hits in game two.
The Lady Warriors will be back in action on Thursday when they host NYIT in a non-conference match-up.
Lady Warriors force extra innings with Felician
Women's Softball
4/7/09- The Nyack College Softball team scored a dramatic tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings with visiting Felician College this afternoon in the second game of their CACC doubleheader. The run created a 1-1 tie, unfortunately, for the Lady Warriors, Felician scored 3 runs in the top of the eigth inning, two on a homerun, and won the game 4-1, to complete a sweep of the doubleheader. In the first game the Lady Warriors had a defensive breakdown, committing 7 errors which led to 6 unearned runs in a 3-8 loss. Shortstop Mel Susen (Sr., Haledon, NJ) and thirdbaseman Christina Braziel (So., Magnolia, TX) both belted doubles in the losing cause for Nyack.
The second game proved to be a pitching duel as Lauren Merkley (Sr., Kinnelon, NJ) surrendered one solo homerun in the fourth inning, as the only scoring of the game until the bottom of the seventh. Nyack mounted a dramatic comeback in that inning when Braziel scored on a throwing error with 2 outs to tie the game. Felician put the game away in the eigth, however, as the Lady Warriors were unable to answer in their bottom of the inning. Susan clubbed her ninth double of the season, her second of the day.
Nyack travels to play Queens College on Friday in a non-conference tilt.
