On May 3, 2010, Master's of Science in Education students were hooded in the President's Hall, Shuman, on the Rockland Campus. The pageantry of the Hooding Ceremony has its roots in medieval times where students graduating with degrees above a bachelor's received hoods which indicate scholarly achievement and professional accomplishments. The blue outer binding of the hood represents the degree in Education and the red and white inner binding color represents the institution, Nyack College. Graduates wear Master's gowns with sleeves with slits at the elbow.
Administration and School of Education faculty participated in the Ceremony, which included the presentation of two awards. The Academic Excellence Award was bestowed upon Martha Diaz and the award for Excellence in Research was bestowed upon Martha Diaz. The Hooding Ceremony included an address by Mr. Walter Woodhouse, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Nyack Public Schools, who recalled his career in education and the influence of a single teacher. He asked the graduates to never underestimate their influence in the classroom.
Students participating in the Hooding Ceremony were:
Martha Diaz MSE in Childhood Education / Honors with Distinction
Tracy Fields MSE in Childhood Education
Angelique Hernandez MSE in Childhood Education / Honors
Cynthia James MSE in Special Education
Luther Plummer MSE in Special Education
Jill Shattuck MSE in Childhood Education / Honors
Lenore Thompson MSE in Childhood Education
