AGSC Prerequisites What if I have not taken the necessary prerequisite psychology courses?
Many of our applicants completed their undergraduate degree in a field other than counseling or psychology. If this is the case and you have not completed the three necessary prerequisite courses listed below, we have several suggestions. Classes must be passed with a C or above.
1. General Psychology (or Introduction to Psychology) 2. Abnormal Psychology
3. Human Growth & Development (or Developmental Psychology, Lifespan Developmental Psychology, or Theories of personality)
If you don’t have one or all of these, please do not be discouraged! Here are a few options you have to meet these requirements:
1. Option 1: Online Courses- Nyack College's Adult Degree Completion Program offers Abnormal Psychology and Theories of Personality (substitute for Human Development) online! This quick, convenient way of taking courses allows you to get one of the prerequisites done in only 6 weeks. Call today to get more information! Call 1-800-876-9225 ext. 521 or email michelle.bird@nyack.edu 2. Option 1: Testing Out -The organizations listed below offer the opportunity of “testing out” of the prerequisite courses. Through this option students are asked to use study materials to prepare for the necessary classes. Then once prepared, the student may set up a testing appointment in their area to take a test demonstrating a working knowledge of the subject equivalent to what would have been obtained during a traditional undergraduate class. This method takes only a few weeks to complete the required test.
