Writing Center Staff (NYC)

Hello! My name is Millicent A. Waterman, assistant professor on the Nyack College Manhattan Campus. I serve as director of the Writing Center and also teach Developmental Writing. Originally, I am from Guyana, South America, where I attained a B.A. in English; a postgraduate Diploma in Education, and a Master in Education from the University of Guyana. I savor the works of Michael Anthony, John Bevere, Maurice Cerrullo, Annie Dillard, Peter Elbow, Anne Lemott, Mike Murdock, Andrew Murray, Watchman Nee, and Tommy Tenney among other writers. I am an ordained elder and engage in intercessory prayers, preaching, teaching, and in Women in Ministry. I like journaling, and I experiment with juicing-fruits and vegetables.

It is generally said that writing is hard work. It is hard work because writing is a process. It is not lineal; that is, it is not a single act of writing some ideas on paper. Instead, it is recursive; that is, it is a series of steps that you work through – a process of planning, organizing, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading. Sometimes, you also have to repeat these steps in order to craft your best writing. Because writing is a skill, you can improve it. What must you do to improve your skill in writing? You have to use several steps. You must clearly establish the purpose of your paper and your audience; generally, for students, your audience is your professor. Next, you need to carefully select your content, and patiently work through the content, following the process of planning, organizing, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading. In addition to taking these steps, come to the writing center. We will assist you to revise your paper, and in the process, you will learn to evaluate your own writing. Bring your paper before due date to give yourself adequate time for revision. We will work with you. We will not write your paper, but we assist you in improving your work. We will assist you with the conventions of English. Come expecting change; leave knowing how to evaluate your writing and experience a sense of achievement. Then, you tell others to visit with us in the Writing Center!

Hello! My name is Joan J. Spence, and I serve as a graduate writing tutor in the Writing Center. I received my B.A. in Biblical and Theological studies from Nyack College.

I am from Jamaica, West Indies, and have always enjoyed writing, reading, and evangelism. My favorite book is A Mind for Missions by Paul Borthwick. I believe that every one of us has a story, and no one can tell your story better than you.
So write it; you can do it!

Hi! My name is Dawn Lysette Grannum, and I serve as a writing tutor to undergraduate students. I am from Guyana, South America. Currently, I am in my senior year majoring in Music Education here at Nyack Manhattan campus. I enjoy reading, writing songs, playing guitar and watching movies. I absolutely love people, nature, astrology, and bizarre holidays. I recently read Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne and recommend you add it to your reading list. I believe that writing is therapeutic. It is a good tool to express oneself and to create change. Sometimes, we are unmotivated to write or experience writer’s block, but no matter what happens or where we go in life, we must keep searching, living, and writing.

Hello! I am Alicia Wu, and I tutor both undergraduate and graduate students who visit the Writing Center. I am originally from New York City and received a B. A. in Psychology and Pastoral Ministry from Nyack College. I enjoy cooking, reading, journaling, writing songs, and playing the piano. I highly recommend the following top three from my booklist: The Sacred Romance: Drawing Closer to the Heart of God by John Eldrege and Brent Curtis, Spiritual Leadership by J. Oswald Sanders, Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by Stasi and John Eldrege, and Power of a Praying Woman by Stormie Omartian. Writing breeds a freedom of expression; it is food for the soul, strength for the spirit, and medicine for the heart.

Hello! My name is Daniel A. Pabon, and I am a tutor in the Writing Center. I am Puerto Rican by nationality and am in my senior year studying music at Nyack College. I love music and enjoy many different aspects of performing as well as Dance Dance Revolution and Parkour. I play handball and video games and love to write. My favorite books are the Green Mile and Carrie, both writtenby Stephen King and This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti. I believe that some people are afraid to write as they feel their level of skill might not be good enough. Others shun the writing process, seeing it as a chore or as a purely academic endeavor. When you write, you create an entity capable of thriving on its own and inspiring others to write, or at the very least, think. Do not be afraid to write well and do not be scared of the massive amount of untapped potential at your fingertips. Find the vast ocean that is your imagination and fearlessly embark on the voyage of a life time! = ^ . ^ =

Hello! My name is Kula Thompson-Williams, and I serve as an adjunct tutor in the Writing Center. I am originally from the West African nation of Liberia. I received a B.A. in English and Bible from Nyack College and am currently engaged in graduate study. I enjoy reading the Holy Bible and everything written by and about the author C.S. Lewis. I encourage you to read The Screwtape Letters and The Four Loves. Also, do add The Storyteller by Mario Vargas Llosa to your reading list as I am currently having fun with it. I believe that we at the Writing Center truly reflect the awesome goals of Nyack College as an institution that is intentionally diverse because we certainly bring a wide range of talents, gifts, abilities, and skills to the center. We have a passion for the way words intermingle on paper, and we will like to share with you the fact that writing is a necessary skill. I believe that through writing we can hear God and ourselves in a profound way. It is an opportunity to see our purposes, successes, failures and growth interrelate and the exciting chance to decide what to do with it each time. Please do not be afraid to come to the Writing Center; we are here because of you and exist to assist and serve you. When you visit the center, we will sit together and assess your writing. Writing is a means to grow and learn from each other.
